The three piece variety has a liquid or solid core and they allow a golfer to have the most control over the way the ball travels. Usually the experienced professionals prefer this variety as they can have good control over the spin and flight. A lesser mortal would not be able to control it this way.

The four piece variety is new on the scene and it is believed they travel further than any other variety.

Remember that if you get hold of the low spin variety you would be able to make the ball travel much further as it will go much straighter. On the other hand, if a spin is the need of the hour, you would ruin your shot by trying it out on such a ball. At the end of the day you need to be comfortable with what you play with, so make sure you are well in tune with the variety of balls you are using in a game. Experiment during practice, and using a new variety at a game is like going into battle with anew gun!
