Stop the Dreaded Golf Slice
Does your golf ball look more like a boomerang moving through the air than a golf shot? Are you tired of spending more time in the woods than most eagle scouts? If so, then you have found the right place to finally cure that nasty golf slice.
Hitting a golf slice, or for a right handed player hitting the golf ball as so the flight path is moving to the right in the air, is and always has been the most common mistake for amateur golfers throughout the history of the game. The reason for the golf slice being so common is that for the most part amateurs are attempting to accomplish other things with the golf ball; such as getting the ball airborne, but going about it in the completely wrong way. The final outcome is the common golf slice. The golf swing is a dependently intertwined motion very similar to a line of dominos collapsing. Every movement in the golf swing then causes a completely dependent future movement based on that prior motion and so on down the line. This domino effect can work out for the good if you know what you are doing, but for most of us it ends up in lost golf balls, lost money, and frustration. So let us now get to the bottom of why you are hitting your slice so we can fix that slice permanently.
There are two main reasons that cause the golf ball to slice. The first is hitting the ball with an open club face, and the second is cutting across the ball with your club face from the outside of your body moving inward towards your body. These two faults are at the very end of the chain reaction which is the golf swing, but not necessarily what you should be directly focused on fixing. When correcting your golf swing, you can not simply focus on the impact of the club face to the golf ball, even though that is important to start to comprehend what you are doing wrong. For instance, saying that you are going to focus on not opening the club face at impact will not work in trying to fix your golf slice. In order to fix your golf slice you must actually identify and focus on the root of the problem which lies many steps back in the line of dominos that is the golf swing. Now let’s try to figure out what some of the things may be that are causing you to hit that dreaded golf slice.
The wide majority of amateurs hit a slice as a result of four major swing faults. The first major swing fault committed by beginners which causes a golf slice is that in attempting to get the golf ball airborne they try to scoop it up off the ground rather than hitting down on the ball and letting the golf club’s loft do the work. The golf ball should always be hit while the golf club is still descending. Most people don’t know this but a PGA pro’s divot actually starts after the golf ball has already been struck.
The next major swing fault which causes the dreaded golf slice for most people is lunging at the ball and moving your head ahead of the ball at impact all while trying to hit the ball farther which then leads the the face of the club being open when striking the ball. If you will address the ball with your head well forward of the golf ball then you will be able to feel just how this will jam the ball right.
The third main swing fault that causes most people to slice the golf ball is having a weak grip. What I mean by this is that the lines which are formed when you grip the golf club between your index finger and thumb on each hand are pointed at of close to your chin. If you think about it your hands have neutral positions. Attempt this on your own to comprehend the idea. Stand tall and lay your hands by your side as they naturally fall. What you are now seeing is that naturally the top side of your hands basically face forward. Now try to turn your hands to the left or right and then when turned relax them again. What you will see is that as soon as they are relaxed they return to that same natural or neutral position again. This is the reason that a weak grip will lead to the ball being struck with an open club head. Inherently in those positions your hands will open the club face up through impact.
Lastly, the final major cause of most people’s golf slice is that they are swinging the club from the outside to the inside. To explain this outside movement in phrases that I have been using, it means that your swing path is taking the golf club out and away from your body on the backswing and then coming from the out towards your body on the downswing which will cut across the ball causing a golf slice.
Now since we have already made the root causes of your golf slice evident, let’s go ahead and lay out some ways to finally fix that slice forever.
